A Call to Arms at Historic Fort Fremont Planned February 13

The newly formed non-profit group, The Friends of Fort Fremont Historical Park, has invited area garden clubs, master naturalists, master gardeners and any interested individuals to attend a winter planting at the park Saturday, February 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Friends will also offer a tour of the fort and share information about its history and its role in the Spanish American War. The group’s president, Pete Richards, said he hopes everyone will show up with a native plant, garden gloves and a shovel.

“We welcome all clubs, organizations and anyone else who would like contribute to the re-vegetation of this valuable site. We hope the effort will not only help preserve the natural and historic legacy of Ft. Fremont, but also promote bio diversity and raise community awareness of plant conservation.”

Some of the native species desirable for planting at Ft. Fremont include Saw Palmetto, Beautyberry, St. Andrews’s Cross, Spanish Bayonet, Wild Olive, Wax Myrtle, Sparkleberry, Inkberry Holly, Hercules Club, Chickasaw Plum and Carolina Laurel Cherry.

The fort was purchased by Beaufort County through the County’s Rural and Critical Land Preservation Program for $5.4 million in 2004. It includes more than 14 acres of forest with 900 feet of beach.
