COUNTY OPENS SHANKLIN ROAD CONVENIENCE CENTER

Beaufort County’s new Shanklin Road Convenience Center, which opened this week, is designed to save taxpayer money through the use of solid waste compactors.

The compactors reduce the volume of waste which decreases the number of trips to the landfill and cuts transportation costs. Jim Minor, the County’s Solid Waste and Recycling Manager, said compactors increase capacity, allowing the County to meet the demands of future population growth.  “In addition to cost savings, the modern facility with its flat design and paved access makes it faster and easier for people to use. We also hope people will find the layout more conducive to recycling.”

The center is located at 80 Shanklin Road, just past the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) off US 21.

The Shanklin Road center was constructed on County-owned property once occupied by Beaufort County Mosquito Control which moved to the County airport on Lady’s Island.

The $746,895 contract was awarded to Andrews & Burgess Engineering for the design of the facility and to REA Construction for the construction. Both firms worked on the project as a team. Six solid waste compactors and nine receivers were purchased and installed for an additional $164,226.
