DRAW SCHEDULE CHANGES FOR WOODS MEMORIAL BRIDGE

A request to the US Coast Guard to change the draw schedule for the Woods Memorial Bridge was granted this week and goes into effect Monday, January 11.

The request was made by Beaufort County Emergency Management in cooperation with the City of Beaufort and the County Engineering Department in an effort to ease the traffic congestion resulting from the highway improvement project underway on S.C. 802 on Lady’s Island.

The new schedule will be in effect for one year. It calls for opening the draw for boats Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the top of the hour only. The draw will remain closed to boats between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. However, it will open at any time for tugs with tows, vessels in distress and public vessels of the United States. The schedule will not be in effect during federal holidays. On weekends, the draw will continue to open for boats upon request.

The SC 802 improvement project includes road widening and other safety upgrades as well as a new bridge span adjacent to the McTeerBridge. For more information on this project, which is funded largely through a voter-approved sales tax, visit the "HWY Projects" tab on the home page of the County website, www.bcgov.net.
