County Prepares 2008 Property Appraisal and Assessment Notices
Notices to be mailed in July and August
Owners of properties that saw new construction, renovations, remodeling or additions in 2007 should expect to be notified this month of changes in the appraised value of their property.
As a result of the South Carolina Real Property Valuation Reform Act, properties sold in 2007 are now subject to market value appraisals for tax year 2008. The law states the appraisals must be based on market values as of December 31 of the year the transfer was made. There are an estimated 9,800 properties for tax year 2008 impacted by the law. Notices of the new appraisals will be mailed in August.
Beaufort County Assessor Ed Hughes said property owners have 90 days from the date of the notice to appeal the assessment, appraisal or classification of the property. Appeals must be in writing.
