APPLICANT SELECTION

The goal of our hiring process is to give all applicants an equal opportunity at employment while selecting the most qualified candidates. Applications are received by the County Human Resources Department and forwarded to our department in a batch following the close of the current application deadline. After review for completeness and minimal current certification level, we contact all applicants by phone or mail for notification of a test date. It is the responsibility of the applicant to keep the Human Resources Department as well as our department advised of any changes in address or phone. We conduct a written test and a practical test, both taken from the National Standard Curriculum at the appropriate EMT level. This is in addition to practical stations covering medical and trauma scenarios. Additionally, applicants will be tested with a recording manikin in CPR. The testing is scheduled on a as needed basis, if you are unable to make the scheduled dates- there are no alternate days. The minimum qualifying score is 75%, with a minimum score of 60% required on both written and practical test. Applicants must score a 70% or higher on the written test to take the practical test. Applicants who successfully complete the testing phase will be scheduled for an interview day and time the last day of testing. Applicants must also submit a certified driving history in addition to submitting references and agreeing to background investigation.

After the testing and selection process is completed, all successful applicants are ranked by the selection committee.

The process is then reviewed for fairness by the County Administration, and the top candidates are offered positions.

All new hired employees are hired on a one-year probationary basis.
