Intermediate Training

Course Description & Entrance Requirements

South Carolina follows an updated Intermediate/85 United States Department of Transportation (DOT) / National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) curriculum. In addition to the curriculum, additional training is provided in AED, LMA, Epi Auto-Injectors, prescribed inhalers, and intraosseous infusion.

The initial EMT-Intermediate course is a minimum of 64 classroom hours and 16 hours of clinical experience.

The refresher EMT-Intermediate course is a minimum of 36 classroom hours.

Entrance requirements for all candidates into the initial EMT-Intermediate training program are as follows:

  • Must be a current SC or NR EMT-Basic and maintain that certification throughout the entire EMT-Intermediate course and National Registry Examination process.
  • Must have aqualifying HOBET score of 42% or higher on the composite AND a 42% or higher on the reading comprehension.
  • Must be or become a member of a SC licensed EMS service & have sponsorship from the service director and the medical control physician associated with that licensed EMS agency prior to state certification as an intermediate.
  • Must have a current BLS credential prior to state certification as an intermediate.

Entrance requirements for all candidates into the refresher EMT-Intermediate training program are as follows:

  • Current South Carolina EMT-Intermediate - OR -
  • Previous South Carolina EMT-Intermediate - OR -
  • Letter of permission from the state EMS office.


All candidates successfully completing a South Carolina EMT-Intermediate initial? course must successfully pass the National Registry EMT-Intermediate Practical & Written Examinations prior to receiving an initial South Carolina EMT-Intermediate state certification.

The EMT-Intermediate course is offered throughout the state in various post-secondary training Institutions which offer courses though a continuing education department:

  • Selected Colleges and Universities
